Failure to use the appropriate JHD template may result in the manuscript being rejected.

The JHD enforces stringent guidelines on ethics committee approval. Regardless of which section your paper is submitted under, you must ensure that you have satisfied the requirements for ethics committee approval. We endorse the guidelines provided by the British Medical Journal in this regard. Responsibility for ensuring that a paper is submitted in line with this guidance rests with the authors. No waiver of process charges can be claimed after a paper is deemed to have breached these guidelines at submission. Further helpful advice can be found here.

Please note: Do not deviate from the fonts or the font sizes in the template. You are welcome to use colour in your figures, photos or tables. Your manuscript should be submitted as an MS Word file.

Manuscripts must be submitted by one of the authors of the manuscript, and should not be submitted by anyone on their behalf. Submitting authors should first register with the journal and log on before making the submission. Submissions can be made on the “User Home” tab.

The submitting author takes responsibility for the article during submission and peer review. To facilitate rapid publication and to minimize administrative costs, The JHD accepts only online submissions. The submission process is compatible with most modern web browsers, and can be used from PC, Mac, or Unix platforms. Files can be submitted as a batch, or one by one. The submission process can be interrupted at any time—when users return to the site, they can carry on where they left off. Files up to 9 megabites can be submitted.

Assistance with the process of manuscript preparation and submission is available from The JHD editor. Click here for instructions on how to submit a paper.

You may also submit multimedia presentations. Please follow the instructions below.

Authors who publish in The JHD retain copyright to their work. Unless otherwise agreed in advance, by submitting a manuscript to the JHD, you are granting permission to The JHD to license the material for full text republication and indexing by organizations with which it has a licensing agreement. There are no royalties to be paid to any authors. Our goal is to provide the widest possible dissemination of this material to the world. Correspondence concerning articles published in The JHD is encouraged through the online comment system.

Please note the following:

  1. Your submission should include affiliations for each author listed. If medical writers have been employed, it is important that their role be acknowledged explicitly. We suggest wording such as “We thank John Smith who provided medical writing services on behalf of the investigators listed in this project.”
  2. Include a word count, figure and table count if appropriate.
  3. Submission of a manuscript to The JHD implies that all authors have read and agreed to its content, and that any experimental research that is reported in the manuscript has been performed with the approval of an appropriate ethics committee. Research carried out on humans must be in compliance with the Helsinki Declaration, and any experimental research on animals must follow internationally recognized guidelines. A statement to this effect must appear in the Methods section of the manuscript, including the name of the body which gave approval, with a reference number where appropriate. Informed consent must also be documented.
  4. We ask authors of The JHD papers to complete a declaration of competing interests, which should be provided as a separate section of the manuscript, to follow the Acknowledgements. Where an author gives no competing interests, the listing will read “The author(s) declare that they have no competing interests”.
  5. Please submit your paper in the appropriate category as listed in The JHD sections.
  6. Do not submit copyrighted or plagiarised material: this includes screenshots of other websites. If in doubt, remove any such material from the manuscript.
  7. For all articles that include information or clinical photographs relating to individual patients, written and signed consent from each patient to publish must also be mailed or faxed to the editorial staff. The manuscript should also include a statement to this effect in the Acknowledgements section, as follows: “Written consent for publication was obtained from the patient or their relative”.
  8. The JHD supports initiatives to improve the performance and reporting of clinical trials, part of which includes prospective registering and numbering of trials. While there are initiatives to ensure that all clinical trials are registered (most notably the recent statement from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors), we are focusing on controlled trials of healthcare interventions, for now. Authors of protocols or reports of controlled trials of healthcare interventions must register their trial prior to submission in a suitable publicly accessible registry. The trial registers that currently meet all of the ICMJE guidelines. The trial registration number should be included as the last line of the abstract of the manuscript.
  9. The JHD also supports initiatives aimed at improving the reporting of biomedical research. Checklists have been developed for randomised controlled trials (CONSORT), systematic reviews (QUOROM), meta-analyses of observational studies (MOOSE), diagnostic accuracy studies (STARD) and qualitative studies (RATS). Authors are requested to make use of these when drafting their manuscript and peer reviewers will also be asked to refer to these checklists when evaluating these studies.
  10. The JHD can only accept manuscripts written in English. Spelling should be in British English. There is prescribed limit for length of articles submitted under each category; please see each template for details. We encourage you to be concise. There is no restriction on the number of figures, tables or additional files that can be included with each article online. Figures and tables should be sequentially referenced. Authors should include all relevant supporting data with each article. The JHD may edit submitted manuscripts for style or language; reviewers may advise rejection of a manuscript if it is compromised by grammatical errors. Authors are advised to write clearly and simply, and to have their article checked by colleagues before submission. In-house copyediting will be minimal. Non-native speakers of English may choose to make use of a copyediting service.
  11. The JHD aims to publish papers within 12 weeks of submission. We rely on reviewers to make their comments within a two-week time frame and authors to respond to comments soon thereafter. Whilst we cannot guarantee these time lines, where we have experienced delays in the past there has usually been a delayed response to reviewers’ comments. We also operate a policy of “double-blind” peer review, which means the identity of the authors and reviewers may not be disclosed to each other.
  12. Inforgraphic: You may submit an infographic to be considered for publication on this site. The infographics are intended to be used by healthcare professionals in their approach to improving the user experience of healthcare.
    1. The infographic is offered under creative commons license and can be downloaded and deployed free of charge for personal use and with credit to the authors.
    2. All images and text should be free of any copyright infringement. The authors are responsible for compliance and including the relevant credits where necessary.
    3. The Infographic will be reviewed by the editors of The Journal of Health Design.
    4. Some editing may be recommended before the infographic is uploaded to the site.
    5. The infographic should be submitted as a PNG file of 600 x 1488 pixels

The Process for Handling Cases Requiring Corrections, Retractions, and Editorial Expressions of Concern

JHD ensures that all of its published journals follow the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) (http://www.icmje.org/icmje-recommendations.pdf) and the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) (https://publicationethics.org/guidance).

We aim to ensure the integrity of the academic record of all published or potential publications. Whenever it is recognized that a significant inaccuracy, misleading statement, or distorted report has been published, it must be corrected promptly and with due prominence. If, after an appropriate investigation, an item proves to be fraudulent, it should be retracted. The retraction should be clearly identifiable to readers and indexing systems.

Corrections

Errors in published papers may be identified in the form of a corrigendum or erratum when the Editor-in-Chief considers it appropriate to inform the journal readership about a previous error and makes a correction to the error in the published article. The corrigendum or erratum will appear as a new article in the journal, and will cite the original published article.

Retractions

Retractions are considered and published when there are severe errors in an article that invalidate the conclusions. Retractions are also made in cases where there is evidence of publication malpractice, such as plagiarism, duplicate publication, or unethical research.

According to industry best practice and in accordance with COPE guidelines, JHD implements the following procedure if a retraction is confirmed:

1.     A retraction note titled “Retraction: [article title]” signed by the authors and/or the editor is published in a subsequent issue of the journal and listed in the contents list.

2.     In the electronic version, a link is made to the original article.

3.     The online article is preceded by a screen containing the retraction note. It is to this screen that the link resolves; the reader can then proceed to the article itself.

4.     The original article is retained unchanged save for a watermark on the PDF indicating on each page that it has been “retracted.”

Editorial expressions of concern

Where substantial doubt arises as to the honesty or integrity of a submitted or published article, journal editors may consider issuing an expression of concern. However, expressions of concern should only be issued if an investigation into the problems relating to the article has proven inconclusive, and if there remain strong indicators that the concerns are valid.  Under some rare cases, an editorial expression of concern may also be issued when an investigation is underway but a judgement will not be available for a considerable time.

The expression of concern will be linked back to the published article it relates to.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The manuscript has not been previously published, nor is it under consideration by another journal (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor). Please note The JHD has a strict plagiarism policy: offenders will be blacklisted from the journal and reported to their host institution. If you are in any doubt that your paper contains plagiarised material, please conduct a thorough check before submission.

  2. We understand that papers not submitted on a template will be rejected. Instructions are here.

  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.

  4. Where appropriate we have full ethics committee clearance for the study we are reporting on this occasion. The approval number/reference is added to the manuscript. We further confirm that we have submitted a paper that is consistent with the guidelines on the requirement for ethics committee approval.

  5. The authors have read The JHD copyright notice and undertake to comply with the terms of that notice. Please note: do not submit any copyrighted material. All figures, images and photographs submitted with your manuscript should be free of copyright and/or appropriate approvals obtained before submission. Authors are responsible for obtaining any such approvals.

  6. We are reporting all conflicts of interest, if they exist.

  7. All authors listed in the manuscript are named in this manuscript. The JHD cannot make any changes to the author list post publication.

  8. This JHD levies no charge for publication.

  9. The JHD recommends that authors nominate two (2) independent reviewers who we may approach to review your manuscript. These must not be collaborators, colleagues or relatives. Please enter their names and email addresses as comments to editor at the point of submitting your manuscript.

  10. Submitted papers must fit within one or more the following themes:

    1.       Accessible healthcare for all

    2.       Valuing the perspective of those who seek healthcare

    3.       Sustaining the performance of those involved in caring for people

    4.       Focusing on small changes that improve outcomes for people in healthcare today

    5.       Highlighting the contribution of design and architecture in the care of those  who seek healthcare

  11. I am not a member of the editorial board or the PPAA and/or I am aware that membership of those groups would disqualify me from involvement in any review or decision to publish this paper.

  12. I have submitted the paper on a JHD template and understand that if I fail to do so that my paper will not be considered for publication
