Micro-innovations for immediate impact: Small changes doctors and patients can make today without system reform

This editorial describes “micro-innovations” that require no new structures or funding, but which can enhance safety, efficiency, and improve patient experience by shifting both provider and patient behaviours within the clinical encounter.
This editorial argues that Vitamin D deficiency—more common in people with darker skin and in low-sunlight climates—contributes to weakened immunity and worse outcomes from upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), which already cause substantial morbidity, absenteeism, and productivity loss. Despite this link, current guidelines advise against routinely testing vitamin D levels even in high-risk groups presenting with URTIs.
